Bizet’s L’Arlésienne Suite No.2 was only arranged after his death; The Farandole movement frequently used in popular culture. The theme music for BBC’s Jonathan Creek, Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre is based on a dark poem by Jean Lahor about the superstition of Death – and dancing skeletons. Rachmaninov’s Rhapsodyis a work of 24 variations on Paganini’s Caprice No.24; the final variation so challenging Rachmaninov worried about his own ability to perform it! Ravel’s Pavane evokes a dance that a young princess may have performed in the Spanish court.
