Visitors will have the rare opportunity to step behind the curtain at one of Bournemouth's most iconic landmarks when Bournemouth Pavilion welcomes guests for exclusive heritage tours as part of Dorset Architectural Heritage Week 2026.

Dorset Architectural Heritage Week, organised annually by East Dorset Heritage Trust (EDHT), celebrates the county's history through a programme of free and low-cost events, tours, and activities held each September.

Guided by Bournemouth Pavilion’s volunteer archivists, tours will take place throughout the day on Monday 14 September, Thursday 17 September, and Friday 18 September, providing a fascinating insight into the Grade II listed venue's rich history, architecture and cultural significance.

Guests will explore the historic theatre, elegant ballroom and backstage areas while discovering stories from the venue's 97-year history*. The tour also includes a close-up look at original stage machinery dating back to the 1930s, alongside expert commentary and anecdotes that bring the Pavilion's remarkable past to life.

The tours aim to celebrate Bournemouth Pavilion's enduring contribution to the region's cultural landscape and offer visitors a deeper understanding of one of Dorset's most treasured entertainment venues.

Opened in March 1929 by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, Bournemouth Pavilion remains one of the South Coast's premier entertainment venues. Home to a 1,500-seat theatre and full-sized ballroom, it has welcomed many celebrated performers throughout its history, including actor Robert Donat, entertainer Billy Cotton and iconic comedian and musician George Formby.

Today, Bournemouth Pavilion continues to host a vibrant year-round programme featuring West End musicals, ballet, opera, comedy, live music, pantomime, community performances and dance events. The venue is also a popular destination for conferences, exhibitions, gala dinners, awards ceremonies and corporate events.

As Bournemouth Pavilion approaches its centenary in 2029, its dedicated team of archive volunteers is inviting residents and visitors to search their attics, basements, cupboards and collections for items that could help piece together the theatre’s remarkable story.
