What to expect at a relaxed panto performance

What is a relaxed performance?

A relaxed performance is the same pantomime, but presented in a more welcoming and flexible environment. Some elements such as lighting, sound and special effects may be adjusted, and audiences are free to move around, make noise or leave the auditorium if they need to.

Who is the relaxed performance for?

Everyone is welcome. However, a relaxed performance can be particularly helpful for people with sensory sensitivities, learning disabilities, dementia, anxiety or other additional needs – or anyone who simply prefers a gentler theatre experience.

Is it still the full pantomime?

Yes! You'll see the same story, characters, cast and comedy. The aim is to make the environment more accessible, not to make it a lesser version of the show.

Will the lights still be on?

Yes! The house lights will stay on during our relaxed performances, helping audiences feel more comfortable and move around safely.

Will the panto still be loud?

The sound and some effects will be reduced or adapted, but the show will still contain music, sound effects and moments of excitement.

What about flashing lights, smoke and special effects?

Effects will be reduced, removed or adapted for the relaxed performance. However, the production will still contain some lighting, sound and effects.

Can I/my child make noise?

Absolutely. There is no expectation that everyone will sit silently. Talking, vocalising, laughing, singing along and other natural responses are welcome.

Can I/we move around?

Yes! You don't have to remain seated throughout the performance if you need to move, stand or change position. You are also welcome to leave and return to the performance whenever you wish,

What if I/my child becomes overwhelmed?

Don't worry. You can take a break and use the available quieter/respite areas. Staff are there to help you.
